 Spermophilus columbianus (Sciuridae)
Commonly known as gophers, these small creatures are actually called ground squirrels. Gophers in Montana are pocket gophers, live 99% of their time underground and are rarely found more than a few to each acre. Ground squirrels, however, can be found in extremely large numbers, and are regarded as vermin in Montana and many other States. Although they look cute, look at those sharp little claws! Great for digging. They are extremely unpopular with landowners and ranchers since the tunnels they live in create dangerous hazards for cattle and other livestock. They are also responsible for more than $7 million annual loss to alfalfa growers in Montana alone.

These photos were taken one summer afternoon in Deer Lodge, Montana. This little fellow was carrying stuffing from a seat in a rusty old Chevy truck to his new home under a pile of old fence posts in an adjoining field.
