The Pintler Scenic Loop

In the Southwest region of Montana, near the town of Anaconda, lies a mountain range known locally as "The Pintler's". With a spectacular variety of scenery appearing around every corner, the highway from Anaconda to Drummond makes for a wonderful drive at any time of year.
The following photographs were taken in September 2003

The main part of the journey runs between Drummond and Anaconda, along Montana Highway 1, with the loop completed via Interstate 90 through Deer Lodge. The drive can be completed in either direction, but on this occasion we drove anti-clockwise.
The first section goes through the small community of Drummond, famous for their 'Mule Days' held every June. The scenery out of Drummond is open, but the Flint Creek range of mountains to the East begins to crowd in as you head further south, through the small towns of Hall and Maxville.

Town of Philpsburg in Montana

The picturesque town of Philipsburg is well worth the small detour off the route. A 19th century mining town, Philipsburg is home to shops selling candy, sapphires and crystals, and many historic buildings.

Continuing along the scenic highway, after passing Porter's Corner, the road enters a canyon with stunning views on either side. Rock walls tower above and a waterfall plunges down a narrow gully as the road climbs steadily towards Georgetown Lake.
